Prostitution and Trafficking Laws:
Virginia
In Virginia, all aspects of the sex trade —whether selling sex, buying sex, promoting it, or profiting from it—are completely illegal. Virginia has distinct laws for purchasing sexual services (solicitation) and selling sexual services (prostitution/commercial sexual conduct). Virginia became one of the first states in the nation to pass “Sara’s Law” or unfair sentencing of youth legislation, allowing courts to depart from mandatory minimum sentences, allowing for treatment in the juvenile system, and rehabilitation when sentencing minor victims of abuse or trafficking who have been charged with a crime against their abuser. Virginia’s vacatur law allows survivors to clear their records of prostitution offenses only.
