Maine
In 2023, Maine became the first state in the nation to pass partial decriminalization of prostitution. Maine now criminalizes only the purchase of sexual services but does not criminalize prostituted people. All other aspects of the sex trade - such as promoting prostitution- remain illegal. The Maine Legislature has approved a process by which persons convicted of the former Class E crime of Engaging in Prostitution may have their records sealed. However, Maine does not currently have a trafficking-specific criminal record relief statute.
