Rhode Island
In Rhode Island, all aspects of the sex trade —whether selling sex, buying sex, promoting it, or profiting from it—are completely illegal. However, Rhode Island has an unusual history with prostitution. Indoor prostitution was fully decriminalized from 1980 to 2009 in Rhode Island. However, the state reversed course because of the rise of sex trafficking and organized crime in the state. Currently, Rhode Island has distinct laws for purchasing sexual services (procurement) and selling sexual services (prostitution). Rhode Island trafficking survivors have the ability to vacate prostitution related convictions only.
